Kondja Negongo had a great question about flash, and he was wondering if having studio strobes is necessary for someone that wants to shoot flash photography.

Here’s Kondja’s question:

“Hi Spyros. I’ve started shooting in studio with flash guns and wanted to ask is it really necessary to get studio lights/flashes? They cost a fortune and for the price of one I could buy two second hand Canon 580 EX IIs. Do they offer anything that cannot be replicated by flash guns?”

The short answer to this is no, studio strobes are not necessary. Both speedlights and studio strobes have advantages and disadvantages, such as weight, portability, power, recycle time and ease of use, all of which I discuss in the video.

I used to be scared of my flash, and I understand how intimidating flash photography can be, but a flash is just a tool. Once you understand how that tool works you’ll be using your flash to create photos that used to seem impossible.
